The “Winds”: Chicago WNFC team announces official name and logo

CHICAGO, MAY 31, 2024 - The much-anticipated Chicago WNFC team has officially unveiled its logo and announced its name: the "Winds."

Starting play in the 2025 season, the league’s 16th team revealed its colors and logo on Friday morning. The Winds are the WNFC’s first expansion team since the Tennessee Trojans in 2022.

The franchise is owned by Chicago entrepreneur, philanthropist, and founder of The Clean Junkie, Angelique M. Smith.

"The name 'Chicago Winds' captures the essence of our great city. Known famously as the 'Windy City,' our team name pays homage to that iconic identity. The Winds represent the unstoppable force and relentless drive that characterize both our city and team. Our logo, featuring the distinctive Chicago skyline, symbolizes the strength and resilience of our community, towering high and proud against any challenge,” said Angelique M. Smith, Owner of the Chicago Winds.

The team’s colors, deeper blue, sky blue, and neon yellow accents reflect Chicago's dynamic energy and vibrant spirit. The navy and sky blue represent the deep roots and boundless sky of possibilities. Additionally, the neon yellow adds energy and optimism, embodying the bright future envisioned for women's football in our city.

“The Chicago Winds will truly represent their community, reflecting the pride, service, and diverse identity of Chicago. Women’s Professional Football is here to stay, and Chicago is the ideal city for this next chapter,” said Odessa Jenkins, CEO of the WNFC.

Smith makes history as the first Black woman to own a majority stake in a professional sports franchise based in Chicago, mirroring the distinction held by WNFC Founder Odessa Jenkins. The Chicago Winds will join other prominent women's sports franchises in the city, such as the Chicago Sky (WNBA), Athletes Unlimited Softball (AU), and the Chicago Red Stars (NWSL).

The WNFC has seen unprecedented growth, with the 2023 season delivering record-breaking viewership and engagement. The league continues to evolve, highlighted by its successful digital partnership with CaffeineTV, achieving over 15 million views.

The Chicago Winds have partnered with Whiskey Girl Tavern, a neighborhood bar in the heart of Edgewater serving craft cocktails and catering to women's sports, to host their first event of the season on June 23. This official Watch Party for the WNFC's IX Cup Championship games will welcome supporters of women's sports, fans of women's football, and potential athletes to attend and meet the leadership team behind the Chicago Winds.
